Hurricane Island Recipe Book

In the fall of 2005 we discovered a granite ledger from Hurricane Island amongst our collection.  This ledger was used for daily accounts of granite cut for part of the Field Building in Chicago, and also included various recipes written throughout the pages.  We transcribed the recipes and “tested” a few.  Then the idea came that we should make this collection into a recipe book with interesting facts about Hurricane Island and its granite history.  We found that the recipes had been written in by Nellie Philbrook who, with her husband and ten children lived on Hurricane during the granite days and again after the demise of the industry.
Our finished book chronicles Hurricane’s history from it's earliest deed, to the big boom days of the granite industry, to its most recent use as a site for the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School.  Plus many tasty, simple recipes!
