Dr. Thophilus Hopkins

Dr. Hopkins was born in Massachusetts and served in the Ruvolutionary War as an assistant surgeon.  He was married four time, his frist wife dying less than a week after their marriage.  In 1805, he came to Vinalhaven with his fourth wife, Martha Spencer Hopkins and seven children (six more were born to them). He is the island's first known physician and was the first Hopkins to settle here.  It is said that Theophilus chose to take a parcel of land in Vinalhaven as pay for his service in the army.  His property ran along the thoroughfare from today's Hopkins' Point to Young's cove (or Calves Cove) with the southern border being Perry's Creek.  Although he died in Camden, it is not known where he is buried.
